renault auto gear modes?

what are the 3 2 1 and the ; s; button for on the automatic selector gear control. the car is a renault megane scenic 1998.
tony greenwood, August 2010
Selecting 1 from rest will not allow upshift at any engine revs and will give full engine braking. Selecting 2 will give normal 1-2 shift and 2-1. select 3, 1-2-3-2-1. Kickdown will work in all drive positions except 1 no matter if 's' is on or not. 'S' will give later shifts on normal throttle openings. Selecting a lower gear will be inhibited if the speed is too great.

3-2-1 are gears that you can use if you are towing etc, otherwise no need to use them, 's' normally means "sport mode" pressing this button allows you to use the "kickdown" option. but it sounds as if you have not driven an automatic before, might be useful if you can find a neighbour or friend who has, to show you how these options work.

hope it helps, August 2010
