Power failure?

My 56 plate Zafira Sri 1.9CDTi 120 lost all power including electrics. An alarm went off at 2am and could not be stopped until it decided to. No electrics to turn on ignition and internal lights briefly flickered like in close encounters of the third kind. Local garage suggested over the phone perhaps the alternator has gone. They qouted approx £600.

Any ideas?

would maybe start by removing and charging the battery up and see if that helps,if you get it going check the charging rate with a voltmeter, seems very expensive for an alternator, try and source a good one from a scrappy and save a few quid if it comes to that.
