how can i fix the tempurter gage on my 2002 fiat punto?

the engine heat gage on my 2002 fiat punto doesnt work properly, it says the tempurter is fine then next thing i know the engines cold, and it stays there for a long period of time, bout 2 hours, then it slowly works it way back up to normal. Any ideas what could be wrong and how i could fix it?

It could be the sender unit on the engine that is faulty it senses temperature and that in turn is sent via the connected lead to the gauge on dashboard Also although a cooling question add it to Vechicles section UNDER CARS bottom of forum list. Copy and paste as you would with a document on pc. don't forget to add to the two boxes title and name,
