How do I stop the upper thread breaking when using zig-zag?

I have a Frister Rossmann model 45. It works fine when using a straight stitch both forwards and backwards but when using the zig-zag the thread breaks and sometimes so does the needle.

Hi Sheila,
Try loosening the top tension slightly, then don't put too much pressure on the foot pedal so the machine stitches at a slower rate.
