vw bora brakes and abs light on 2000 model petrol?

when i start the car up it tells me to check brake pads and the abs light stays on ive been told it could be because its got wrong brake pads on is that true or could it be something ealse please help doing my head in

it mean's you have a problem with the brake's(possibly need pad's changing)you may need to have it plugged in to a computer to reset light's or locate abs problem
