sams4 till crash using scanner?!?!?!?

Everytime I try and scan an item that I have previously programmed onto till, the till crashes. The scanner beeps when reading the barcode but then none of the till buttons work and screnn stays at 0.00
help?

This usually means the RS232 port has not been configured for the scanner. Has this scanner been working on your cash register previously?
