how can i fix the transmision in my 1997 mercury cougar?

Is there something that engages the transmission into reverse and can it be replaced. Its a 4R70W.All the forward gears work great. Was stuck in snow had a bad brake booster. Wheels didn't come to complete stop before going into reverse
