set timing on ford fiesta courier td turned it over by hand locks up. turn it one way it's fine turn it the other way it locks up.

as an addition to learned gents above remove cam cover the cam has a slot at the back end which allows you to slide a special tool (flat piece of steel 6mm thick and 50mm wide roughly) in to set the cam up, the slot is off centre so it will be obvious which is right...

before putting crank pin in,turn crank to just before tdc [check with keyway on crank-should be near to vertical] insert pin fully then turn crank till it abuts pin.then with camshaft and pump in correct positions belts can be put on and adjusted.

if I remember correctly,timing pin through alternator mount bracket,10mm plug in block for the crankshaft and two pins into camshaft and pump sprockets,think there were two belts on these,separate one for pump,get the crank pin in first and turn till engine goes solid,that is your crank in position and time cam and pump accordingly,dont overtighten belt or it will whine.
