My drive belt snapped which i replaced Citroen Picaso 1.8 2001?

At first my battery would not hold a charge but now its gone and cooked my battery as it was red hot to touch and steam was coming out of the vent pipe, why has this happened ?

Sounds like an alternator problem. If the voltage is not getting regulated, it would do that to your battery.
