floppy gear stick?

I own a 1998 Peugeot 206 1.1 LX. Got into it this morning and the gear stick was just flopping about,as if there was nothing supporting it,does go into gear ok but lots of free play.Would appreciate any help in solving this problem

Most gear shifts have some bias springs to hold them in place. You have either a broken spring or the bits that the sping(s) attach to are broken. Usually the parts are cheap but you need to get under the gear shift to see what's broken.
