Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2005 When pressing "phone" button on the radio a message appears " Audio Mute" My phone searches for a Bluetooth connection without success

I have a similar system but on a 58 plate, the 'phone' button only acts as a mute on mine. But I can synch the phone and stereo via bluetooth if I turn the phone bluetooth on first before turning on the headunit.

Try this, if not try searching all the menus on the stereo including holding down the menu button for a few secs.
