how do i replace a cam gear on my bernina 707 sewing machine please?

I am tempted to buy a new cam gear stack for my sewing machine - the plastic has perished with age. But I'm worried if I undo the screws that hold it is place what will happen. Has anyone successfully managed to replace the gear part?
