Amstrad drx100 stuck in standby?

Tried pressing backup when switching on the power to force software download (this has always worked before) but only light that is on is the standby light.
Dave, October 2006
You can let go of the backup button when the message appears. I would change the 1000mf caps first though or it is a waste of time.

Just had the same problem with my drx100. Tried the hair dryer but no apparent effect. Then tried the hold down backup button solution still no effect. Not one to give up I tried hair dryer again - no apparent effect. Then the backup button again - HEY PRESTO. Only problem now is I dont know which solution sorted it. Good news is its working and I have switched off auto standyby. Cheers to you all.

Just read previous answers after my Thomson Sat Box refused to vacate the red light, despite getting assistance from Sky Customer Services who advised that the Box was kaput. Tried the hairdrier trick and hey presto - it works. Thank you to whoever came up with that solution. Can anyone advise why this works?

Neil, November 2012
did the hairdryer for a few minutes, worked, remarkable !

wilfie, August 2011
Hair dryer did the trick for me. Bizarrely.

tunbridge wells chap, February 2011
David's answer from 2008 still holds good... Holding down the Backup button as per his instructions... No need to resort to a hairdryer, although that sounded intriguing. Thanks very much.

Damian, February 2011
tried everything and then the hairdryer directly through the upper right vents for about 60 seconds and it WORKED!!! , all these months of messing with it and waiting hours etc.. Thank you Mr Hair Dryer !!!!!

mal mudge, December 2010
I just want to say a big thank you to everyone on here who posted their remedies to sorting the 'stuck on standby' problem!
The hairdryer trick worked for my box!

THANK YOU ALL!

Have tried the backup procedure several times but still not working. Just replaced the 3 1000uf 10v capacitors on our DRX100 and it now works perfectly.

Zip Nolan, March 2010
Tried to do download. Had no effect, so what the hell gave the hairdryer a go. DID THE TRICK.

scouser dave, February 2010
I unplugged my box and went away on holiday for two weeks. Came back the other day and had a cold house and a digibox stuck on standby. I have tried the hairdryer, and tried holding back up - neither work... is it time to buy a new box?

Sharon, January 2010
Look! I am an electronics engineer so I wanted to diagnose this 'stuck-on-standy' problem and fix it. Tried everything.

Well, one stupid suggestion on the forum was to warm the power supply with a hair dryer.... Why not? Worked within a minute! I had moved the box to a colder room and not powered it up. So will just leave it on.....

Thank you hair dryer person!

Michael, Loch Lomond, January 2010
just heat up the power board with a hair dryer, this works fine.

stephen, October 2009
i have the red light of death also, is the backup button scenario a myth as it doesnt work for me.

Stephen, October 2009
Hi I have an Amstrad power supply board in front of me and I can only see 2 1000uf 10v capcitors and not 3! or is it just me?

Bilbo, August 2009
Hi
Tried David's remedy - Software download - result - box fixed, sore finger from keeping button pressed.......
Thanks very much David.

same thing is happening to me,always happens! Around 4-5 times in a month for some reason. We always try the back-up thing but sometimes the lights come on, but the message isnt shown? Whys that?
Hellpp!

Kasey, February 2009
I did the back up thing and it worked for me. I had to do it twice, but after the second time, all is now fine!

Money saved!

my Amstrad drx100 was stuck in standby, simply replace the 3 1000uf 10v capcitors on the power supply board, box worked perfect after that. should cost about 60p to £1 to fix.

the green light is on on the sky box but i have just a blue screen and nothing from the remote

chris, November 2008
Hi,
Do you have the same problem as I had ie the standby light (on right hand side of the box) is permanently showing red and will not change to green when the Sky button is pressed on the remote.

If this is the problem you have to reset the digibox by getting a software update from the satellite, as follows:
1. Ensure your TV is selected to view the Sky broadcast, via the SCART connection with the DRX100 (mine is AV2)
2. Remove power lead from the mains supply (ie remove power from digibox)
3. Press and hold in the 'Backup' button on the DRX100 digibox
4. Put power lead back in and switch power on
5. After 2/3 minutes the 4 lights on the front of the DRX100 will light up
6. After approx 8 minutes you should receive a message on your TV stating a software update is taking place which will take up to 10 mintes.
7. Continue to hold in the 'Backup' button for the next 10 minutes then release it - the 4 lights will remain on for a short time and then go out
8. Now is the moment of truth and you should now get a green light when you press the Sky button on your remote - it may take 2/3 presses to achieve this
9. It worked for me fine - I think the secret is keeping the 'Backup' button pressed in all the time through steps 3 to 7 above
Good Luck, David

both are inaccurate this is power,pure+simple-its a problem or it would not be stuck in stand by! the reason is=power, that is why ,for safety it sticks in stand by,the power unit needs replacing, forced download is not a fix-that means the box you are using(if that works-the method etc-given the forced download isnt even a method that sky use-its merely a coincidence that pressin back up+pluggin the unit in someone accidentally came accross+it may work for some but again that means the box has a fault 2 start with)is faulty as the forced download is not a download at all its a system reset with no control+isnt the normal thing 2 do,the other problem is that if u keep ur sky box unplugged from the fone then when u eventually plug it back in+it auto updates-it will take the latest first(unlike say-windows)missing sometimes vital firmware or other info updates.ergo there is a power problem,lol@ 65 notes from sky-20 quid will get you a great box on ebay or lgg or any of the 109 uk auction sites.the power unit is about 20 quid so not worth it-given these are 10 years old+not as good as modern ones they have served thier purpose, just get a replacement from ebay-even hd ones go fer 2o quid more than sky replacin the amstrad one!

doc, March 2008
Remove and check all your aerial connections.
Make sure they all go back correctly.
For some reason, this works on mine.
It may be vibration loosens them making a bad connection.
Make sure your digi box os disconnected from the mains as the satellite input lead can cause damage if it shorts.
If you're lucky that is the problem.

John, November 2006
I assume that forcing the download caused the problem? (Forced downloads should only be used in extremis and when there is a good signal.) You may have corrupted the firmware. In which case a call to Sky will get some one round to swap the box out for £65.
