How to get an electric doorbell ringing?

I have installed an old style interrupter electric doorbell (connected via transformer to the mains) which buzzes instead of ringing (though there is a single ring on the last strike).

How do I correct this? Where should the striker be positioned in relation to the bell. There is an adjusting screw for altering the distance, with another screw to fix the chosen position.
