I have an 8 day Smiths mantel clock works on hammers for the chime date 1960.The clock works pefectly except for the striking mechanisim,it chimes every 15 mins and the hour.my problem is it just clicks when it is supposed to chime???????????????

Your clock is probably dirty and even worn. You will have to pull the movement and check for wear in the bushings. If the wear is not too bad you can oil each pivot with clock oil to loosen the train. Do not us regular oil or spray oil. If this is beyond your skill then take it to a good clock repairman in your area.
