What could be some of the faults that would cause this problem?

I have a new 9V battery. when switched on there is a slight crackling when the tuner is moved, but nothing else. Both on long and medium wavelengths there it is not possible to pick up any signals. What could be the cause of this problem?

Looks more like a RADIO problem than an audio one.

Maybe there is NO signal available to pick up in your area. Quite possible in some areas, mostly mountainous ones.

Is there an antena connected?

To much background interferences may cover the transmission.

Some obstacles may isolate you from the signal: Metal mesh or foil in a wall, armed concrete, many metallic beams and girders, thick walls (especialy if containing mineral rich stones), any underground location, ...
