How do you connect to the internet?

Do you use only a modem, or a modem-router combo or a modem and a router?
Maybe ther are to many devices connected to your line.
If you use a phone line based broadband, you have some RF filter. There must be NO such fliter between the modem and the phone entry, only on the actual telephone connections. Those filters prevent the broadband signal from reatching the phone and causing noise.
Do you have 401 errors? That means that your router is set to block access to those site. Check your router's configuration.
Do you use any proxy? If so, check it's configuration. If you don't know what a proxy is, you probably don't use any.
