how do i fix my dvd/video cassette recorder combi?

I have a dvd/video cassette recorder TOSHIBA model no 19dtkb2 which i got to transfer old videos to dvd.
when i plug it in it makes a strange clicking noise which Seems to be coming from the back. no display is visible. what could be the problem?

i had the same problem and ended having to get in touch with the toshiba helpline on 0844 856 0730 they gave me a local number to ring it cost me £35 but solved the problem hope it works for you cheers
