The info given by "some guy" is true . . . I've "repaired" by sons' PS2 twice this way. Don't be afraid to open up the box, but like he said, DO NOT sever that metal ribbon thing, that would not be a good thing

Ok if it is not the slim version this is what you need to do. Unplug your console, controllers, and memory cards. Get a small flat head and pry the pads on the bottom of the system off. There will be screws underneath these. Take them all off. Flip your system back over so it is right side up. Lift the back part of the system off first. Then the front side where your memory card and controllers go in. Note: MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT SEVER THE RIBBON IF YOU DO YOUR SYTSEM IS TRASH. Before you go any further eject the disc tray and then shut it off and unplug it again. Open the black box (there are 4 screws.) Then get a Q- tip soaked in rubbing alchohol and wipe the lense off. (Be sure not to push too hard.) And ta da its clean! Also while your in there, vacum out the fan (thats just a good thing to do.) And reassemble it.

some guy that is giving advice about how to fix your disc read error but i dont know if you will do it because some people are scared to open there system, November 2006
