How to change the back plate of a wing mirror?

Our driver side wing mirror of 2006 Renault Kangoo was smashed the other day. We have a replacement but it is now black backed rather than matching the colour of the car. We now have to change the back plate of the passenger wing mirror to match. How do we take this off without breaking the mirror?
