How can I fix my electrolux epic 6500 SR vacuum?

My vacuum shuts off saying the bag is full when it is not. When I take the hose off the canister it stays on, but as soon as I put something in front of the hole (hand, hose, etc.) it shuts off. Even when I try to blow out the hose where the filter is it shuts off. Any ideas? (Can't find my manual either, if that would have anything in it.)
Thanks for the help

JAG was right about the piston being broken. That was the problem with mine. However, you'll find a small pinhole on the back panel inside the bag compartment. If you remove the bag and seal that little hole, it will fix your problem with showing a full bag. However, it will also not alert you when the bag is really full. If you still want directions on opening the canister, email me at stegenkj@hotmail.com.

I think you have no choice but to go to a service center. However, I am curious to get instructions how you opened the canister. I can't Borehole@comcast.net

I just tore my dad's electrolux epic 6500 sr apart for exactly the same reason. Directly under the control knob there is a vacuum unit with a piston in it. There are two o-rings on the piston and the piston was broken allowing the o ring to mostly slip off the top of the piston and thus loose its seal. I have not yet found a source for buying the piston needed. Any ideas?
