my ps2 won't read the software?

My PS2 will not read disks. I suspect it's the laser but I want to be sure before I replace anything. Is there a way of checking and pinpointing the problem? A new laser is around £30 but I'd be disappointed to buy one only to find it's something else

if you contact sony in britain you can often get it sent off for a diagnostics test and repair at around £50 i believe but you are probably better off just buying a new one for around £95
