if i record a program i loose all the other chanells. but if i am watching a channel and a timed recording is set the recording fails.

Congratulations - the most obscure question do far this week. That is to say you don't even say what box you have.

Having said that the generic reason for your problem is that you only have one tuner in your box or you only have one (working) feed to the twin tuners in your box.
