alarm sound travel?

hi there guys, bit of a weird question but i have a scantronic 9600 with a texecom odyssey 3, and sometimes i have deliberatly set the alarm off to see how far the external sounder travels, but here is the question one time i set it of and the sound traveled very far the entire neighborhood, but the second time it wasn,t very far at all, does sound travel with the wind or have i gone slightly death thanks,

hi alarm, it turns out im not deaf after all lol, earlier on the cat tripped the alarm and it was blaring the entire street out even on the main road at the top of the estate it could i could still hear it despite the traffic. any way you were right sound must vary depending on the wind directions. cheers

Or you`re going mutt and jeff.

This is another reason many emergency services started using "white noise" rather than sirens which are affected by the "Doppler " effect.

Doppler effect
n.
An apparent change in the frequency of waves, as of sound or light, occurring when the source and observer are in motion relative to each other, with the frequency increasing when the source and observer approach each other and decreasing when they move apart.

hi there so the sound sort of varies to different locations depending on the weather so it was still as loud as it was before but the wind was different? thanks
