Why is my oil pressure so high? [97 ford falcon EL]?

My oil pressure gauge ranges from 0 - 7, usually my oil pressure sit pretty constant at around 4-5, yesterday I was driving when it all of a sudden shot up to just over six and won't go below that, at one point it was almost at seven so in the red zone on the dial. I haven't changed anything, not even topped up the oil, so why is it so high and how do I fix it?

Check your oil filter, it may be clogged.
It's also possible that something is obstructing the oil flow somewhere after the oil presure sensor.
Finaly, the oil presure sensor may be faulty.
It may be an harmless situation that may correct itself after some time, but may also be very serious: The oil can't go to where it's needed, causing excessive wear and may eventualy destroy the engine.
Bring your car to a mechanic to check for any problem.

Somewhere in your system will be an oil pressure relief valve,if you have a manual it will show its location, sorry don't know on these,it may be sticking there again your gauge may be at fault, good luck.
