Russell Hobbs two slot toaster working one side only?

I was making toast putting 2 slces in the toaster and as I was doing so I saw a spark near the element in the second side. Therafter only the other side works. Is it the element that has gone?
Is there a repair please? Can I do it myself and if so how please. Any help is appreciated
