First it wouldn't turn to change the length, so I took it all apart. Found the part that needed to turn, oiled well, then used two opposing pairs of pliers and got it to move freely. Put it back together - but now it ONLY sews tiny stitches. Before it was stuck on 11/inch (which would have worked better!). What is wrong?

I'll answer my own question. Took it apart again and found a "plunger" which wouldn't plunge. Soaked in oil, got it moving freely and reattached. Now I have variable length stitches! Persistance pays.
