How can I fix the humm on my DAB Radio?

I have a Roberts RD-3 Digital Radio. When I switch the power on I get a very loud continuous humming/buzzing sound. It doesn't matter what setting the Volume knob is on. I can tune the radio and hear the sound from different radio stations with the volume turned up but the humming is always there in the background.
It happens on all sockets in the house and in my friends house.
How can I fix this annoying noise please?

By the way, the radio works brilliantly on batteries.
It's just on mains that it produces an awful humming/buzzing sound.

Hi Roger,

Yes, I've tried 5 different mains wires all over the house and in a friends house. I've checked the plug, wiring and fuse.

There's no external power supply - just an "ordinary" mains wire.

I get great sound from the radio stations; just this awful constant hum in the background.

Have you tried the radio in a different location, the hum you are getting is from another electrical device

I don't understand what you mean by a new PSU.

I just use an ordinary mains "wire" with an 8-shaped connector into the radio and a 3 pin plug at the other end, which plugs into the mains. I've tried several mains "wires" and still get this humming sound.

From what you say there is very probably nothing wrong with your radio.

You describe mains-hum that will be getting through to the radio from the external power supply

Get yourself a new PSU (power supply unit - mains adapter)

Good luck..., May 2015
