why do all the doors but the drivers door lock and unlock on the central locking, used to work fine

Maybe the drivers door solenoid has failed.
Maybe the wiring to the solenoid has failed (Especially where it flexes near the door hinge)

You would do well finding a Rover enthusiasts forum. This problem must have come up before.

Maybe do a Google search for - say - "Rover 45 door lock" and see what comes up.
