1400 cc Renault - WHAT?
ON the assumption hat its a fuel injected petrol, you coulk check the throttle is closing properly and operating the "idle" switch. Had a similar problem on my Espace a while back and a couple of squirts of WD40 on the spindle and mechanism, plus a prolonged, forcible manual waggliing sorted it.
