The heating only comes on when I override the timeclock if in timer mode the timeclock keeps the correct time but does not bring the heating on. I thought it might be a faulty thermostat but if u turn it up and down you can hear it click on and off ...any ideas ?

Consider that the Timer Programmer might be defective - in the mean time before you fit a new one leave the heating on permanently and adjust the room thermostat before retiring and when you get up as a control.
