Can the tiniest of cracks around the boltholes in my distributor cap cause intermittent starting problems with my 1995 Nissan Primera.Sometimes I have no problems for days,then go to start it and it starts but conks out almost imediately

potentially yes, the spart from the cap will find the easiest route on a moist day the cap could arc out causing a loss of spark. easy check is to start the car and spray a mist of water on the cap using a spray bottle, window cleaner etc. but wash out first. if you see a spark then you should replace it.
