Mk5 escort Stalling at junctions?

I have a problem with my 1.4 Mk5 escort (CVH) in which it intermittently stalls when aproaching junctions etc. It also tends to "lurch" on run-down. It also feels like it is "hunting" on full acceleration. Plugs & HT leads have been re-newed with no difference - Are the single point injection carburettors a bit temperamental?

Air filter and fuel filter may need to be replaced, it could also be due to a soften of the breather hoses as was the case with my car a while back.
