how do you fix a foot joint?

My daughter has a Gemeinhardt flute. The serial number is L90719. We bought it used about six months ago. A month or so ago the foot joint became loose and it has on at least one occasion actually slipped right off. Why did this happen and can it be fixed? Her teacher suggested wrapping a piece of scotch tape around the body where the foot joint attaches as a temporary fix. Is this a repair that 1.Can be done? 2.That we can do at home? 3.That a professional must do? And if so is it expensive? Does it take a long time to repair?

My teacher hs to do this with my flute very often. He has some pliers, which he puts into the place hwere it attaches and simply widens the joint. He is a professional at reapiring flutes, but this fix is also temporary. He has to widen the joint about once every other week. Can anybody tell me how why it always gets misshapen, even if I don't do anything ot possible misshape it?

You need to get it properly re-fitted so it does not leak air. A 5 minute job for a repairer with the correct tool - longer if they have to clean off sticky stuff first..........

teflon plumbing tape works much better than scotch tape
