In some cases it can be friction on the guide rails for the laser assembly and can be overcome by applying a little vaseline smear (open the disc bay and you can get access that way). This problem is usually accompanied with mechanical 'grunting' from the drive.
Mine has now started to give up after half of the dvd has played and I can't work that one out :((
