the speedo on my rover 214i is not working but the rev counter is.what are the main problems as to why this is happening

I had this problem, one day it would work and the next it wouldnt untill it stopped working compleatly.There is a cable that runs down to the back of the gear box(quite tricky to see)unfortunatly mine had a split which made it loose this might be the problem you have?
