a symbol has appeared on my dashboard,it looks like a graphic of the engine.what does this signify? my car is a renault clio 16v.

that symbol is your engine management light. it means there is a fualt in the engine. you need to take your car to a garage where they will scan your car with a diagnostic scanner and they will tell you whats wrong with it. The scan can be a bit pricey so phone around and get a few quotes first
