is it a mk3? if so it could be the ecu relay it costs about £10 from main dealer but only buy the one made in germany the malaysian ones are useless.When you are trying to start the car if you take the fuse box cover off from under the steering wheel this is where the relay is, it will get hot to touch if this is the problem
