How can I fix my very old original traditional singer sowing machine?

My Singer sowing machine is a traditional type (probably 60 plus years old at least) which has an electric motor and pedal fitted to it. When I encounter thicker fabric, as when one passes over a double hem/seam, the 'clutch' starts slipping and the electric motor simply disingages.

Hello Allan,
When you say the clutch starts slipping do you mean the stop motion wheel that you loosen off to wind the bobbin, if so what you need to do is undo the screw on the stop motion wheel and unscrew the wheel all the way off, you will see a three pronged washer, turn the washer round so it is in a different position, put the stop motion wheel back on and tighten it up finger tight, tighten the small screw back up again and make sure you can undo the stop motion to wind a bobbin, if it does not work start again and turn the washer upside down this time, you will get right. any problems e-mail me at drivewithken@blueyonder.co.uk
