I have just purchased the house and need to move a detector, but cannot see how to do it with out setting off the tamper alarm.

The instructions does not mention anything about this only omit a detector!

Its a 9448+ system with a 9427 keypad

If the tamper circuit has been wired up then taking the front off the detector will indeed activate the tamper alarm. If this happens simply enter your user code to silence the tamper alarm. After moving the detector and refitting the cover re-enter your code to put out the tamper light and return to day mode.
