Lawn Mower hard to start?

I have a Scotts 6 & 1/2 HP Tecumseh Engine lawnmower that just about breaks my arm when I try to pull the rope to start. It takes quite a number trys before it does start. Is this a timing problem and can I do the work myself?
The mower No. is sku#597-506. The engine Model OVRM105-120.

only turns over after priming, then dies

I too had the same problem. I found the timing was off. I set it as the manual states and "bingo", NO Arm jerking! Great running engine. I specifically bought that Scotts model because of the OVRM105-120 engine. They run forever....

Use starting fluid, give it 1-2 shots in the air cleaner, prime the blub & it should start up the 1st time. Bought mine 1998 from home depot then quit selling them, use it every week for 1-2 hrs. Looks bad but still running. Wish they would have all replacement parts for it but they don't. After it breaks I guess it will be tossed out & start again with a new brand. But the mower has been good to me for the hrs on it. I use red line oil, premium gas, turn up the engine speed for taller grass mulshing and drive the heck out of it.

I had the exact same problem on the same model mower with a 6.5 hp Tecumsuh engine. After much research it turned out to be the ignition timing was off. If you have a service manual for the engine and a basic knowledge of small engines,I think you should have no problem. The service manual can be found online at" www2.unstable.org."

sounds like an inefficiency in the engine i.e. lack of oil or damaged crankshaft/piston rings.
