Kenmore 80 Series Tub Won't Spin?

I'm having the same problem as other posters with the Kenmore 80 series washer - the tub won't spin. The rest of the cycle is working fine (ie water is emptying out, etc). ALso, my wife has found some black flecks in with some of the last few loads we've done. Sounds like a damaged belt? I just don't know how to get at it.

the washer is model #110.20882990 and it seems to wash just fine.

I learned that the coupler might be the source of the problem. From what I can tell the coupler is made of a plastic composite with a metal ring molded into it in which the drive shaft connects too. When this ring is worn, it will not engage in the direction for spinning. And correct me if I am wrong, when the machine is in wash mode the drive shaft ingages in the opposite direction (elect motor changes rotation) in which the ring is not bad in the direction of rotation for washing.
As for the black specks, I just replace the water pump that connects to the opposite end of the motor shaft. The pump has an impeller that is black in color that was rubbing against the inside wall of the pump that eventually burned thru the plastic causing it to leak. Which led me to believe that some of the impeller debris got in to the wash cycle somehow.

Hey this did the trick for me!!! Ain't the internet wonderful. My machine was working 25 minutes after it refused to spin. Thank you, thank you, thank you, it was the balance switch....

Have similar problem. Spinning stopped with no motor noise. Unplugged machine and replugged. Got motor sound but no spin. Tilted it back to find a loose belt just sitting there, however, i cannot seem to divulge the information of where it goes back on. The belt is smaller than the normal ones. Very odd indeed.

Hi Matt,

Check the out of balance switch not to be confused with the door latch switch. The out of balance microswitch should have attached next to it a piece of thin plastic going down near the side of the bowl.
The out of balance switch can cause shorts or opens and causing a false out of balance and will sit there until the balance is fixed therefore no spin.

my sugestion if you know how to is test all your switches and connections also a cheap multimeter will come in handy and save alot of dollars.

if you have some knowledge and expert knowledge of mains power u can try this at your own responsiblity:

the out of balance switch needs a NO = normally open or NC = Normally closed circiut. You could remove one wire off the switch and tape up with insulation tape(triple X2 dont be sparingly cover all the metal on the connector and at least 3 cm down) WITH POWER OFF FIRST test if machine fires up and will fill machine and do all the stuff you want it to if it fails on the spin again next try both wires together causing a NC circuit .

normally the side if the switch has a small diagram and it will show wether or not it is a NO or NC switch so check that first if you do have a meter

also I can only put the black flake stuff down to gearbox fluid (faulty seal starting to give on the main shaft) or if you wash heavy soiled clothes alotta dirt oil etc it can form a layer of grim on the bottom and sides of the bowl try a enviromental friendly grease cleaner wash in water only.
fortunelty I think your Drive belt is safe and not breaking up into your clothes the belt is external from the bowl and would have to do a pretty wild move 2 get up the top of your machine.

good luck hope u get things resolved

good luck!
