my s/sheet will not move when pressing enter

In Excel some of my cells which contain a lot of text show as lots of # characters. What causes this?

Does anyone really use OpenOffice's Calc? I'm wondering whether to switch from Excel, but don't want to be unable to share spreadsheet files?
