My Singer 9005 machine is breaking the top thread?

I have gone through my settings (tension, stitch length, etc.) and believe everything is correct. I can get fairly good straight stitches for a very short period and then the top thread breaks. I am using 50 thread and cotton material. I changed thread to see if that was the problem to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anne

Check you have the needle inserted the correct way round. Flat side to the rear on that model I believe ( facing away from the front of the machine)

Check first of all to make sure you do not have any sharp bits on the needle plate, raceway or bobbin case, failing that it is usually getting the top tension right and making sure you are using a good mercerised thread, the worst it could be is timing.
