Sometimes the autofocus won't work unless there's a sharp edged image in shot in dark conditions. I agree, use the flash but try to frame a highlight in the shot too, for the autofocus to latch on to.

If it has a shutter speed remember you cant hand hold less than 1/60th of a second. 1/100 or faster should be used.
