Hotpoint electronic 1200 deluxe 9545- something banging loudly?

From the start of the wash cycle, a very loud banging/knocking sound can be heard as if something banging on the top of the machine from inside. Continues throughout wash. Spin cycle has been violently noisy for a little while. Any connection?

Disconnect power
Take top cover off
Check drum retaining springs - one may be broken allowing drum to spin off centre severely
