My daughter's Astra Bertone (2002 model) had this fault
A common problem with these key fobs is that the battery holder itself becomes detached from the little circuit board inside fob (Try shaking the fob and you may hear rattling).
If you split the key fob by lifting the little tang on the other side from the lock / unlock buttons slightly and pulling the 2 parts clear from each other you'll be left with part that goes in igniton and the part that contains the battery. On battery part gently prise the 2 halves apart just by use of your fingers (Watch for the circuit board dropping out).If the battery holder is loose or detached fill the half cover (usually has a red gasket/joint around it) with tissue paper folded over several times and this will compress the battery hold to the connections.
I used this method on both my daughters keys and it worked on each when using the key in igniton point II method.

Hi, thanks a million for the info, the 4 step solution Dylan gave worked! I had the same problem with the remote stopping to function, struggled for a day to try and find the problem. And with the help of the internet and you ou's it is fixed in under a minute.
Cheers again!

Lets clarify this a bit.

I had the same problem, replaced battery in remote and it still didn't work until I tried this method.

1. Sit in car and close doors.
2. Insert key in ignition and turn until the dash lights come on (don't start the car).
3. Hold the unlock button for a few seconds and the doors with lock and unlock themselves.
4. Key works.

Dave, all you have to do is sit in the car with all the doors shut, put the key into the ignition turn it to on (not start the position before start) then off six times leaving in the on position on the sixth time then press the lock/unlock button on the remote heads.. IMPORTANT NOTE: this puts the car into learn mode and all remote heads have to be present eg if you have two both wil need to be retrained by pressing the unlock/unlock button. i have used this method on astras vectras and zafrias. also works on opel and vauxhall as there made by the same company

Hi Dave, try this method,
switch ignition on (not start)
programming mode activated for 30 sec's
press lock or unlock button
c/locking activates to indicate correct syncronisation
switch ign off
if that fails then you need diagnostic equipment to reprogram the remote
