i have the 2nd and 4th light flashing on my hotpoint bfi620?

the 2nd and 4th light flashes but the machine seems to start and rinses cold onto dishes but then stops. salt ok, pipes ok, what is this fault, is it an engineer job only, I was thinking possible thermostat, we have a water softener so can't be scale!
