Had a similar problem with a window.Can you remove anything from the handle mechanism,to expose the internals,if so ,you may be able to see the internal mechanism,& get the past the broken section & release.Have you got another door the same ,if so,might be worth figuring out how that one works before having a bash at the broken one.Also,you may be able to see the lock mechanism reference number,which if googled,may lead to a supplier,who could help.
