The filter was very furred up, but even after cleaning it and the pipe coming down from the drum, it still won't drain. Presumably there is an outlet pipe from the filter, but I didn't see it.

My washing machine wont drain & there is an electircal buzz, we have tried swithching the power off & on, it also wont spin or respond to any setting

make sure you can turn the pump around, you can do this if your finger (but not with the machine on...!) if you can't turn it, look for something thats stopping it. a pin, old money, anything....! Bosch are knew for this, well all machine are, if you can turn then it looks if you going for a new pump.
